When using Cryotherapy a super fine applicator is held closely to the skin imperfection and liquid nitrogen sprayed onto the distorted, unhealthy tissue only. This is usually from 1-30 seconds, depending on the size and depth. The legion is then allowed to thaw, and return to its natural colour. The process may be repeated in the same session if required. Please view the above video for a demonstration on an example of Cryopen™ treatment. When using Plasma, numbing gel is applied to the skin for a few minutes. Then the hot probe is used to painlessly zap away the mole, skin tag or mila instantly.
Cryopen or plasma lesion removal application time is 1 to 30 seconds, usually with one or two passes per treatment - depending on your individual assessment. Application for small lesions like skin tags & milia is just a few seconds. We usually book a 30-60 minute appointment session, which give us time to do a full consultation before your treatment.
Cryotherapy and Plasma are both low-risk procedures. Cryopen™ delivers N2O directly to the area, and not the healthy surrounding tissue. Cryopen™ is both CE and FDA registered.
After care is minimal as there is no wound or raw area. However, a small blister is not uncommon in the first 24 hours, this is reabsorbed by the skin quickly. The lesion will dry up, assume a darker colour and slough off in 1 to 2 weeks. It is very important not to pick at the area as this will increase healing time. What is the expected healing process?Healing occurs from 1-6 weeks depending on depth of and size of lesion. Lesions usually assume a darker colour (this is the dead cells), as the skin regenerates underneath it will slough or flake away.
Generally no. Cryosurgery with Cryopen™ preserves the tissue matrix which is relatively cold resistant, and therefore allows for proper cosmetic healing with minimal scarring. This will of course depend on your skin type, and how well you follow the aftercare advice. Hypo-pigmentation in the area (a small pink patch of skin, where new skin has formed, that is lighter in colour) may be visible for 2-6 months. This color loss may take longer to return in darker pigmented skin.

Pregnant or breastfeeding women and those with auto-immune disorders or cold sensitivity are not suitable for treatment. It is not suitable for those that suffer from keloid scarring.
A Skin Tag is a common skin growth that looks like a small piece of hanging skin, often described as bits of skin-or flesh-coloured tissue that project from the surrounding skin from a small, narrow stalk. They typically occur on the neck, underarms, eyelids, and under the breasts. They are harmless and do not become cancerous or malignant. Skin tags are usually inherited. Treatment with CryoPen involves freezing the base of the skin tag close to the blood supply of the growth. This procedure is well suited to treating small or large skin tags because it accelerates healing with minimal pain and damage to the skin. Most of our clients prefer this method because it offers immediate results. The growths will turn dark, and just drop off over a few days. Skin tags are completely removed usually with the first treatment.
CryoPen is perfect for mole removal. But, you will need to check with your GP prior to treatment if you wish for us to remove a mole. We can email you with a helpful form for your GP to complete. This is just to check that the mole/s are safe to remove. You will need to bring this form to your appointment. Moles turn darker after treatment, flaking away to reveal new skin. Depending on the size and the depth, sometimes a second treatment is required if they're still apparent after 4 weeks. Solar Lentigo, Sun Spots and Pigmentation. To protect itself from the damaging effects of the sun, your skin increases its production of the dark brown pigment called melanin. The extra melanin makes your skin look darker or sun-tanned. In some cases, the sun causes an uneven increase in melanin production, which produces irregular coloring or pigmentation of the skin. Lentigo or lentigines may evolve slowly over years, or they may appear suddenly. They may occur anywhere on the body and vary in colour from tan-brown to black. They usually require just one treatment with CryoPen. The area will go darker after treatment, and flake/slough away to reveal new ski
Cryotherapy and Plasma Lesion removal are non invasive and relatively low risk. There are a few side effects that may occur as a result of treatment your skin tags, moles, or milia, including: • Temporary pigmentary changes (hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation) in the treatment site. If this happens skin colour normally returns after a few months. • Temporary loss of sensation (particularly in areas where nerves lie close to the surface of the skin, on fingers, wrist, area behind the ear) Reports show that normal sensitivity returns after a few months. • Blister in the treatment area - this will be reabsorbed by the skin. Side effects are very rare, but please discuss any concerns you have with your clinician.
The cost of your session will depend on the type of imperfection, and the size of the area. Individual costs can be discussed over the phone, email or at a face to face consultation. It is generally a low cost option compared to alternative methods. Smaller lesions typically respond well with a single session, although this cannot be guaranteed. Larger lesions, stubborn warts & verrucas may require more than one session.
It is virtually painless, you probably won't feel a thing! The accuracy of Cryopen™ or Plasma means that healthy skin around the site of the lesion is less likely to be effected, and therefore it is not painful. Treatment is generally very well tolerated, even with those with a low pain threshold. The sensation is similar to a stinging nettle on the skin when the nitrous oxide reaches the bottom of the area, but this vanishes quickly. There might be a little residual stinging for a few minutes after treatment. The area will be slightly itchy for about ten minutes. Occasionally a blister might form and persist for a few hours. This is NOT to be confused with traditional Cryotherapy, which can be very painful as it usually hits healthy tissue.
For most lesions just one session is needed, however, this depends on the skin lesion being treated and on the individual healing response. We will contact you around 4 weeks after your first session to check your healing progress, and if necessary we can arrange another session for you.
Repeated short freezing cycles recommended if you have a darker skin type. This just means that you may need two sessions spaced a few weeks apart to remove your lesion rather than just one. Can children be treated?Yes, because of the reduced discomfort, we are often able to treat younger patients without distress. You will be asked to fill in a parental consent form before your childs treatment.
These little red dots are called cherry angiomas, blood spots or ruby points. They are made up of a cluster of tiny capillaries at the surface of the skin, andcan range in color from bright red to purple. As they grow larger, they tend toexpand in thickness, and may take on the raised and rounded shape of a domeand may be located on any part of the body. Everyone seems to develop a few,but the number is genetically determined. They usually appear in early adulthood;but the onslaught in those genetically inclined tends to increase as one approaches their 40's. Red dots considered to be painless and harmless. Removalis easy with CryoPen. They often turn darker as they heal, but heal beautifully after usually just one treatment.
Milia often referred to as milk spots or facial oil seeds, are keratin-filled cysts that can appear just under the epidermis. They are common in people of all ages, they appear mostly on the face. They can turn dark after treatment, and fall out. They are easily removed with CryoPen usually in one session.
Warts usually have a "cauliflower" like appearance, and commonly appear on the hands. Verrucas sometimes called plantar warts or spelled verrucae - are warts that develop on the soles of the feet. CryoPen is great at treating stubborn warts and verrucas, even if other methods have failed. They can turn dark and flake away after treatment. Depending on the size and the depth, sometimes a second treatment is required if they're still apparent after 4 weeks. We may ask you to exfoliate any dry or hard skin from the wart/verruca before your appointment.
